There was an apparently unjustified police shooting in Oklahoma. Awful. A life is lost. A family is bereaved. The government will probably pay a large civil settlement which will not make things right.
I don’t know what was in the cop’s mind. I don’t know if he’s a thug. I don’t know if he was scared. I don’t know if he had an inexplicable surge and pulled the trigger and even he can’t say why.
He will answer to the law, and the consequences will probably be severe.
But I am sick, sick Joshua Kistler, of the phrase “judge, jury and executioner.” It is so fake. I guarantee you the cop didn’t get in his car that shift thinking “I am God. I can kill who i want. I am judge, jury, and executioner.”
Cops carry guns because they do dangerous work that brings them face to face with all sorts, including low down loathsome bad guys. But when they pull the firearm out of their holster, they are not presuming to exercise due process, to weigh the evidence, then reach a verdict, to issue sentence, and execute. They are doing something raw and consequential that few of us ever face.
If they react wrong. If they react stupidly. If they react prematurely. There should be a serious consequence, possibly including charge, conviction, and prison.
But no one, least the cop, thinks he is wearing the hat of “judge, jury, and executioner.”
