My dad taught me when I was young (and has repeated it more times than I can count over the last 50 years) that you can tell the caliber of a public figure by how the media responds to them. If the media loves them, then the person probably has ill motives.
If the media attacks the person, that person is probably a pretty good person. The person may not be perfect, but s/he is someone who has good motives. The media doesn’t bring out their big guns against bad people. They bring out their big guns on people who are going to put the establishment in their place. It’s a rule I’ve observed to be true my whole life.
