Since our government seems blind to the crisis obviously at hand, there are some things you – the citizens – need to know about surviving a mass shooting. Learn them, teach your children.
During all this mass upheaval and bickering, I keep thinking about the difference between now, and fifteen years ago, when the planes struck the towers. Americans rushed in to help, to solve the problems. Americans came together under one flag, determined to put an end to any invasions from outsiders.
Outsiders, meaning anyone intent on hurting Americans.
There were no Democrats hell bent on preventing Americans from protecting themselves against the terrorists who attacked us. None put up a howl about removing planes from our society, or lowering the level of high-rise buildings. The talk was about STOPPING the invasion of people who wanted us dead. We began doing things to protect ourselves from terrorists. And for eight years – 8 years – there were no more attacks on American soil.
In many ways, Americans over those years became complacent. Those who had warm feelings, arms open and lovingly innocent, welcomed the enemy into the house of the people. They heard only his promises of rainbow stew changes, happy plans of feeding the multitudes, and opening the gates of America to “color”. The many apathetic souls who mistook our strengths and exceptionalism, the power that had been protecting us from another terrorist hit, as overbearing – voted for the seductive words of a thief. Hell bent on destroying American Exceptionalism, seducing the innocent, young, complacent into his lair, determined to divide and conquer, the destroyer in chief took up residence and began his divisive role as destroyer of the greatest nation.
We don’t have to let him, or his terrorist friends, win. We are still America, the EXCEPTIONAL land of liberty, founded by good men on a foundation of strength, honor, and vibrant power. Faith and hope can prevail again, in our homes, in our hearts, and in our land. It will come with the determination of the people to survive, to overcome the evil that has come to take us down, and to THRIVE.
Below, you’ll find four deliberate actions you can take if you’re faced with a terrorist situation, where there is an active shooter in the building:
1 – ESCAPE
If you can, escape. That is the first action you should take, get out. Hit an exit and get away from him. As far as possible. Don’t stop. Keep going. Alert the police, or call in backup and help, after you’ve escaped.
2 – Arm yourself.
If you have the ability to shoot back, do so. Fire back. Carry. Practice, and know how to use your weapon, then fire back. The most effective way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. You’re going to need this to successfully fight back and protect yourself. Get the gun. Get the training. Know how to use it and be safe in doing so.
3 – Barricade
If you can barricade yourself and others in a safe place, do that. If you can’t get out, but if you can barricade yourself away from the shooter, make that happen.
4 – Fight
Go for the knees, take him down. If you’re close to the shooter, chances are you won’t be able to run, won’t have time to grab your gun, and barricading yourself away from him when you’re three feet away will be impossible. But from three feet, you can’t “obey his orders” to get on the floor and take out his knees with a swift dive straight at him. Natural instinct from him will be to either drop the weapon, or pull up, rendering any shots to ricochet. Hopefully, once he’s down, others will back you up, because 3, 4, 5, 6, on a shooter will render him unable to keep shooting and one of you should be able to take control over his weapons.
When a shooter appears in a room and you’re there, you have split seconds to make a decision. We can’t be complacent about this situation anymore. We have to know what we’ll do. When you walk into a building, look for the exits, look for possible places to ‘hide’, and be prepared to take action to protect yourself and those around you.
